Pond lighting: Tips and ideas for your pond lighting concept
For many home owners, their garden is the jewel in the crown. A centrepiece, in many cases, is a garden pond. The gentle sound of reeds rustling in the wind, the soft burbling of a sprinkler or the glitter of fish scales reflected in the sunlight: a pond is an oasis of piece, where you can forget the stresses of everyday life, while you watch rays of light twinkling on the crystal clear water, bathing the little eco-system in brightness and warmth.
But what about after the sun goes down? We have put together some practical pond lighting ideas and tips for you to enjoy the delights of your pond at night as well.
Find answers to the following questions about pond lighting here:
1. Which luminaires are suitable for pond lighting?
There are many different ways to illuminate your pond. There are pond luminaires that are placed on the edge of the pond and those that are placed directly in the water. Below you will find ideas on how to beautifully light up the edge of the pond and the pond itself.
Illumination around the pond
Garden spots are ideal for highlighting plants or shrubs near your pond. Depending on the settings you choose, you can create a variety of light accents and a fascinating interplay of light and shadow.
In-ground luminaires are a good alternative for spots. Unlike spots, they illuminate trees and shrubs from below for a warm and welcoming ambiance.
Solar pond lights are another option for around the edge of your pond. The right solar lights will emphasise the beauty of rocks and other decorative objects by the water's edge in the dark. Super practical: Once the sun rises, the solar lamp will recharge to once again illuminate the pond after dark.
Decorative pond-side lighting with light globes or other shapes will look playful and creative. You can create new highlights and mood lighting to suit any season or occasion.
Portable battery-powered luminaires for outdoors are practical above all else. These luminaires are great for illuminating your pond or any other area of your garden. Depending on the model, the LED luminaires can last up to eight hours. And if the evening goes on longer than planned, Paulmann battery-powered outdoor luminaires can easily be recharged with a powerbank and USB cable.
Underwater lighting in the pond
Pond luminaires placed directly in the garden pond create exciting effects. Water plants like water lilies will offer a completely different visual effect at night. Your underwater pond lighting must be completely watertight to ensure that no harm will come to the sensitive pond flora and fauna. The same applies for floating pond lighting and all cables. Practical: The Paulmann underwater luminaire can be filled with gravel to place it at the bottom of the pond. There will be no need to create cable openings in the pond tarpaulin.
Paulmann Tip:
Although underwater lighting poses no danger to fish and other pond life, the lights should not remain on all night long as it could confuse your little pond dwellers over time.
2. Careful planning: a must for pond and pond-side lighting?
230 V mains electricity cables must be routed underground at a depth of 60 cm and only be installed by a professional. Make sure you plan all outdoor cable routing for your outdoor and pond lighting well in advance if you device in favour of mains power outdoor luminaires. A failure to do so could mean costly earthworks later on.
We recommend our Plug & Shine system if you would like to be able to change things up from time to time and be more creative with light for your pond and garden. The cables can be routed under and above ground, so you can make changes whenever you like. Another advantage: The complete set can easily be extended with additional luminaires.
3. Could my pond lighting be an electrocution hazard?
You will have nothing to worry about, once you choose the right IP protection. Free-standing pond lighting should have an IP67 protection class, while underwater illumination will have to be IP68. Only use the cables supplied by the manufacturer, as these must also be waterproof to ensure reliable protection against electrocution hazards. Have a look at our page on outdoor IP protection if you want to learn more about the various protection classes.
There are, however, alternatives if you are not sure about using 230 V mains power for your garden luminaires. The Paulmann range only offers 24 V pond luminaires that pose absolutely no danger to you, your kids or your pets. You are definitely on the safe side with us!
4. Can I save electricity with LED pond lighting and solar-powered garden luminaires?
Your electricity bill can quickly become a real issue if you want to illuminate your garden and your pond. Our tip: LED luminaires for the pond will make your bill much more manageable. LED pond lamps consume only one tenth of the power used by conventional lamps.
Solar luminaires are the cheapest alternative in the long term. Once purchased, they incur no further costs. Don't forget, however, that solar cells need sunlight to recharge, and longer periods of bad weather may leave your garden in the dark for a while.
Pond Lighting Overview
You should choose luminaires with IP67 protection class for luminaires placed around the pond. Pond luminaires for underwater use must have IP68 protection.
High-voltage pond lighting must be carefully planned in advance. Our 24 V Plug & Shine system offers much more flexibility if you want to be able to change the lighting concept from time to time.
Keep your electricity bill manageable by choosing LED lamps or solar lights.
Warm white light (2,700 - 3,000 Kelvin) will enhance the calming effect of your pond oasis.
