How We Built Our Indoor Garden Using Paulmann’s URail Lighting System
by Jack Kinsey
If you had told me a year ago that our glass orangery office would become a full blown tropical hideaway, complete with palms, alocasias, bird of paradise and even hanging vanda orchids, I would never have believed you. Especially not in the middle of a gloomy British winter.
Yet here we are. Morning coffee now happens beneath palm fronds. January and February feel unexpectedly warm and bright. Plants that should be struggling at this time of year are instead thriving. The real shift seems to come from the lighting, specifically Paulmann’s URail system paired with their plant grow bulbs. This entire transformation took place in a single day and it has completely changed how we use and enjoy the space. Here is how it all came together and why the right lighting has been so essential.

This entire transformation took place in a single day and it has completely changed how we use and enjoy the space. Here is how it all came together and why the right lighting has been so essential.
Why We Needed Better Light Even in a Glass Room
You would assume that a glass orangery offers more than enough natural light for tropical plants. We certainly did. But tropical plants have their own ideas. Vandas want very bright conditions, bird of paradise sulks as soon as the light drops and alocasias quietly complain through winter unless they are truly happy.
And of course there is the British winter which seems to be six months of rolling cloud. Even with floor to ceiling glass we noticed deep shadows, shorter daylight hours and darker pockets where some plants simply refused to thrive. It became clear that we needed something discreet, flexible and able to deliver a proper plant friendly spectrum of light. This is where Paulmann’s URail system teamed with their Reflector Plant Grow Lamps made such a difference.
It is important to say that this kind of transformation is not limited to garden rooms or dedicated plant spaces. The beauty of the URail system is that it works equally well in a terrace house, a flat or a period property where the thought of rewiring electrics is daunting. Most people do not want to take ceilings down, replasterboard or patch plaster after new wiring. With URail you do not need to. The rails mount directly onto your existing ceiling which means you can improve your lighting without any major building work. It feels incredibly accessible. And honestly, as a fairly novice DIY person myself, I was surprised by how straightforward the installation was. If you are willing to pick up a screwdriver you can at least get the rails in place confidently. This lighting is not only for house plants either.
If you want better task lighting, general lighting or a brighter corner in your home, URail adapts beautifully.

The Lighting System That Changed Everything
The setup was installed in a single day and the difference was instant. The space gained warmth and structure and began to feel genuinely tropical. One of the biggest surprises was how flexible the Luxe GU10 spots were. Being able to slide and reposition each spotlight means the lighting can evolve with the plants. If a palm shoots taller or a vanda sends out a new flower spike, adjusting the light is as simple as nudging a spotlight along the track. The black matt finish blends seamlessly into the slatted timber ceiling. In photos the rail almost disappears, as if it was designed specifically for this room. The warm wood slats create soft linear shadows which the lighting emphasises subtly, adding atmosphere without ever feeling clinical.
The grow bulbs themselves offer something very different to standard lighting. Their pinkish spectrum washes across the leaves at dusk and creates a warm, sunset like glow. The plants respond beautifully. The vanda orchids in particular seem to revel in the extra light. Seeing them flower indoors, in winter, still feels slightly surreal. Around the room the light catches the texture of the large ribbed planters, the glossy leaves of the palms and the soft fronds of the ferns which spill gently over their pots. In the evenings the pink light mixes with the candle glow from the woven rattan lanterns which creates a layered, almost Mediterranean feeling of warmth and cosiness. It is a space that feels lived in rather than styled, somewhere to settle with a drink or sit quietly with a laptop under the canopy of greenery.

Houseplant Advice for Creating a Thriving Indoor Jungle
Working with tropical plants has taught me that light is just as important as water. A well watered plant can still struggle if the light is insufficient, especially during the darker half of the year. Grow lights can genuinely change the outcome for many species.

Light Setup Tips I Wish I Knew Earlier
Winter daylight is rarely enough for tropical plants, even in a glass room.
Flexible lighting is incredibly helpful. Being able to reposition each spotlight makes the system far more adaptable.
Angling spotlights rather than aiming them directly downward creates a softer, more natural spread of light.
Most houseplants prefer grow lights positioned around 20 to 40 centimetres away.
Combining ambient lighting with targeted grow lights creates both atmosphere and function.
Before and After A Completely Different Space
Before the URail system was installed the orangery was a beautiful room but still ruled by the British winter. Grey, low light days left plants looking tired and a little defeated. Once the new lighting went in the whole space lifted. It felt brighter, warmer and far more tropical, even on bleak afternoons. What surprised me most was how naturally I gravitated towards working in the space. It began with me bringing my laptop in for a simple change of scenery. I settled into the wooden cane chair beneath the palms with the orchids hanging just above and immediately felt calmer. The soft rustle of leaves, the warmth of the lighting and the sense of being tucked into a green corner made it an unexpectedly peaceful workspace. Before long the orangery had become my favourite place to work. Emails, editing and planning all feel easier when done beneath what feels like a small indoor canopy. Beyond the visual transformation it is genuinely calming to work beside so much greenery. Being surrounded by palms, orchids and generous foliage creates a grounding, almost meditative atmosphere. It feels peaceful, uplifting and quietly energising. And the best part is knowing that the plants are actually thriving under the grow bulbs. Throughout the darkest winter months they have stayed healthy, vibrant and full of life.
