2. Which garden luminaire for which purpose?
Create a concept for your garden lighting to make sure you will fully enjoy your garden in the evening and at night. There are a variety of outdoor illumination options you can combine for best effect. Here you will find an overview of garden luminaires and their purposes.
Shrubs & Trees
You will create a wonderful ambiance in your garden by simply lighting up trees, shrubs and other plants. In-ground luminaires, garden spot and fairy lights are your best choices for that purpose. Think about how you will emphasise trees and shrubs depending on the beam angle of the light:
For smaller, broader trees, we would recommend garden lighting with a broader light emission (around 40 degrees).
For higher, narrower trees, a lamp with a narrow light emission (around 20 degrees) would be preferable, as the light will reach more height.
Lawns, shrubs and other plants of varying heights will look more interesting when lit up, have more personality, and become distinctive light features in your garden. For these, you would be best served with in-ground luminaires or spots – which are available with various beam angles, so that you can create light accents exactly where you want them.
Another great idea: how about fairy lights for a tree? It will create a wonderful ambiance – perfect for a romantic evening for two.
Flower Beds
In-ground luminaires and garden spots are perfect for highlighting beautiful flower beds as well. They create light accents and make them the focal points of your garden at night.
Paulmann Tip:
Light accents in parts of your garden you love the most will add depth to the overall appearance.
Garden Pond
What better place to relax than the peaceful oasis that is your garden pond. Greenery around the edge of the pond will emphasise the calming effect of the water. A combination of underwater lights and luminaires dotted around the edge of the pond will allow you to enjoy the peaceful ambiance at night as well as during the day.
Path Lighting
We've all seen the statistics: most accidents happen at home. Garden paths should always be illuminated to prevents falls during the twilight and night-time hours. A positive side effect: illuminated garden paths add visual sectioning to the dark expanse of your garden. Bollard lights, on-ground luminaires, as well as in-ground luminaires are all great choices for lighting up your garden paths.
Garden Wall
How about some light bars or spots directed at your garden wall to create indirect lighting for your garden? The light is reflected back from the wall and dispersed diffusely into the area directly in front of it. If your garden path runs along the wall, you can use wall luminaires for orientation – and don't worry about it if there are no power outlets nearby: we offer a whole range of solar-powered wall luminaires to light up your garden wall.
Portable battery-powered luminaires: the practical alternative anywhere
You need a lot more flexibility with your light for a garden party or if you just want to sit outside at night to read a good book. You can use portable battery-powered luminaires for great light in the garden if you don't want to spend time routing cables. Depending on your needs, it is really practical if you can dim your garden lighting. Our versatile Plug & Shine system, as well as many wall luminaires from our outdoor range and the portable battery-powered luminaires on offer can be dimmed to suit your mood.
