Kitchens: Where functionality meets brilliance

The kitchen is the heart of any home. Here, you cook and eat – but also celebrate and bond with loved ones. Therefore, the light concept in any kitchen should be adaptable to various situations. There are several ways to achieve an atmospheric but functional experience in the kitchen:
  • Basic, secondary and accent lighting is the perfect foundation, however it’s ideal to have light spread across multiple sources.
  • systems like  URail,  LED-Panels and recessed spotlights coupled with lamps and soft accent lighting, usually offer enough light sources to meet the various needs required in the kitchen.
  • Direct lights are great for task-oriented work, and are best placed over worktops and kitchen islands, however indirect lights are best for cabinets, drawers, pantries and shelves.

Paulmann pro tip: For the dining area, aim for a combination of both: try dimmer lights that also adjust in tone (warm to cool white) as a solution for transitions between task-oriented and relaxation-led activities.

Bedroom: the light of your dreams

The bedroom should feel like a calming, restorative environment. While most focus on textiles and furniture in this space, lighting is often an afterthought, despite playing a huge role in creating a healthy routine, in tandem with a feel-good ambiance. The right light can help you relax at night and make you feel more awake in the morning, depending on the tone, placement, and material.

  •  LED panels or LED strips are great for basic lighting, as they’re easy to install and diffuse light well, meaning you’ll have uniform, soft light throughout the room.
  • Pendant luminaries and hanging lamps can add a dose of cosiness and charm, though rail systems can be more effective in older homes that might not be symmetrical.
  • Create lighting zones based on your activities. For example, backlighting your closet with LED stripsor using soft, bedside table luminaries, which will not only look luxurious, but be highly functional, too.
  • Choose luminaries with a tunable white function to access white light to help you wake up in the morning, while toning down to warm light for when you’re ready to wind down at night.

Paulmann pro tip: try upcycling your favourite vintage lamp by retrofitting it with new LED  smart or ultra-efficient lights and wiring to make it more functional and energy efficient.

Bathrooms: consider circadian rhythm

Many people feel apprehensive when lighting the bathroom due to concerns around water. Luckily, there are some very actionable tips and considerations for those looking to install new lighting solutions in the  bathroom .

  • Bathrooms benefit from a balance of overhead and ambient lighting.
  • Recessed LED panels tend to perform well in this space, as do recessed spotlights.
  • Mirror luminaries offer highly functional light for routines whilst LED tiles provideadditional light to the wash basin which can make morning routines easier and more efficient.
  • LED strips with decorative accents help round off the overall look of the bathroom, to give the space a cohesive and calming ambiance.

Paulmann pro tip: As most spend their mornings in the bathroom, it’s recommended to consider cooler white light to mimic daylight and help support your biorhythm to ensure your bathroom lights support healthy habits.
