Völksen, March 2024 – Whether you‘re at work, cooking in the kitchen or winding down with a good book in the evening - lighting plays a crucial role in enhancing your experience. It’s not just about illuminating spaces: it’s about promoting health and comfort for your eyes. Research has found that lifestyle habits such as prolonged exposure to digital devices and to LEDs with low CRI can negatively impact eye health. This is why, at Paulmann, we prioritise certain comfort criteria for our lamps to ensure that your lighting experience not only enhances your surroundings but also contributes positively to your overall wellbeing.

Paulmann lamps with the “Eye friendly” label fulfil the following comfort criteria:

Colour consistency

Colour consistency is the uniformity of colour temperature in LED lamps. Maintaining a high colour consistency is crucial for colour matching between different lamps, ensuring a harmonious lighting ambience. Paulmann’s “Eye friendly” lamps boast exceptional colour consistency, delivering uniform white tones within the same spectrum range, guaranteeing a seamless lighting experience.

Colour rendering

Artificial lighting can cause eye strain due to flickering, glare, and inadequate colour rendering. However, natural light mimics the optimal lighting conditions experienced outdoors, reducing the strain on our eyes. This can lead to improved focus and productivity levels. The colour rendering index measures an LED lamp’s ability to reproduce colours naturally. A high score indicates better colour rendering, which is critical for accurately seeing colours under light. Paulmann’s “Eye friendly” lamps have a colour rendering index of 80 Ra or greater.

Photobiological safety

It’s important to choose lighting with your health and wellbeing in mind. Prolonged exposure to blue light, UV and Infrared fractions can lead to eye strain and sometimes more serious conditions. Photobiological safety refers to the light produced by LED lamps that is safe for human health. Products that meet these safety standards ensure that they have no harmful effects on the eyes or skin and can therefore be used in a variety of applications without concern. Paulmann’s “Eye friendly” lamps are photobiologically safe, with minimal blue light, UV and infrared fractions.

Flickering and stroboscopic effects

Flickering bulbs or not having adequate task lighting can lead to eye strain. LED lamps are consistent in their glow, with minimal flickering and stroboscopic effects, providing constant light without visible fluctuations. This makes them gentler on the eyes and minimises potential discomforts such as headaches or eye strain. Paulmann’s “Eye friendly” lamps provide minimal flickering and stroboscopic effects.

The Paulmann HLC feature for health and wellbeing

Another way in which light can have a positive effect on our wellbeing is human-centric lighting or HCL. The light colour and brightness is based on natural daylight to support the human biorhythm. The smik app offers the Paulmann HCL Cycle feature, which automatically generates the light preset by the user for specific times of the day. How about starting the day with invigorating cool white light in the bathroom, followed by warm white light for a relaxed breakfast in the kitchen? Intelligent lighting functions like these are made possible by modern LED technology and smart lighting control, which offer a whole spectrum of light colours and brightness levels to choose from.
