For decades, halogen bulbs have been a popular choice for lighting. They provide a bright and clear light that is suitable for many applications and offer impressive versatility. Read on to fi nd out more about the benefi ts of halogen bulbs and the properties of these light bulbs.
The advantages of halogen bulbs
Halogen bulbs offer numerous advantages that make them an attractive solution for a wide range of lighting tasks. They produce a bright, warm white light that resembles the light colour of a traditional light bulb and are often fully dimmable so that the light intensity can be varied fl exibly. Thanks to their compact design, they are available in many shapes and sizes - from small G4 plug-in bulbs to larger R7s models. Another key benefi t is that halogen that halogen bulbs achieve full light intensity as soon as they are switched on. They are also more environmentally friendly than conventional light bulbs as they are more energy effi cient and, unlike compact fl uorescent bulbs, for example, do not contain mercury. They are characterised by an excellent colour rendering index (CRI), which enables the halogen light bulbs to show colours in their truest and most natural shades, without any distortion.
Service life and performance
The service life of halogen bulbs is typically between 2,000 and 3,000 hours, which is signifi cantly longer than that of traditional bulbs, but shorter than modern LED light bulbs. Their performance is impressive, as they offer excellent brightness with a compact size. At the same time, halogen bulbs are versatile: they are available in low-voltage (12 volt) and high-voltage versions (230 volt) and are suitable for different socket types.
Halogen bulbs and their possible applications
Halogen bulbs have a range of applications and are extremely versatile. They are ideal for indoor lighting - whether for ceiling lights, wall lights or decorative table lamps - and create a warm and pleasant feel in any room. Their clear and bright light quality also makes them an excellent choice for work areas that require clear vision such as desk or workshop lighting. Low-voltage halogen bulbs are ideal for accent lighting, especially in spotlights and track systems, where they provide targeted lighting accents.
Our halogen bulb range
Our collection features a high-quality selection of halogen bulbs. Our low-voltage halogen bulbs are small, compact and powerful and are ideal for use in the smallest lights or spotlights. Thanks to the G4 base, they are easy to change, provide all-round uniform ambient light and are characterised by their high luminous intensity. With a service life of up to 2,000 hours and dimmability, they are a fl exible choice for a wide range of applications. Our high-voltage halogen bulbs offer the same compact design and high performance and are also suitable for small lights or spotlights. They create perfect and uniform light distribution and are easy to install thanks to the G9 base. Like their low-voltage counterparts, they offer high luminous intensity, all-round uniform ambient light and a service life of up to 2,000 hours. Special halogen pin base bulbs are designed for oven use. At 2,700 Kelvin, these variants produce a bright and clear warm white light. They can be connected directly to the 230-volt mains supply, are small and bright and can be changed just as easily as the halogen models above thanks to the G9 base.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do halogen bulbs work?
The way halogen bulbs work is similar to the principle of traditional light bulbs - but they convert a larger proportion of the electricity into light. As the bulb reaches high temperatures during operation, its base must be particularly heat-resistant to prevent the glass from breaking. Unlike traditional bulbs, halogen bulbs contain a special gas in their base that prevents black deposits forming inside the bulb and also gives them their name.
Do halogen bulbs consume a lot of electricity?
Compared to LED bulbs, halogen bulbs are less effi cient in terms of energy consumption. They use around 20-30% less electricity than traditional bulbs, but consume signifi cantly more than modern LED light bulbs. For energy-saving lighting, there are LED alternatives that use the same base and consume signifi cantly less energy.
How long do halogen bulbs last?
Halogen bulbs last between 2,000 and 3,000 hours, depending on the model. This is longer than traditional light bulbs, but shorter than LED or fluorescent bulbs.
What should you look out for when buying a halogen bulb?
Make sure that the socket is compatible with your bulb, for example G4, GU10 or E27. Also consider whether you need a dimmable version. Light output and light colour are also important selection criteria.
Why should you not touch halogen bulbs with your hands?
The surface of halogen bulbs is made of quartz glass, which is sensitive to grease and dirt. Touching the bulb can lead to fi ngerprints being burnt in and the bulb overheating more quickly or even being damaged. Therefore, always use a cloth or gloves to fi t the bulb.
