Choosing the right combination of lamp, transformer and dimmer
Dimming LED lamps
When is dimming a good idea, and how can you find the right combination of lamp, transformer and dimmer?
Dimming is a type of lighting control, in which you control the brightness (i.e. luminous flux) of a lamp. With it, you can create a variety of mood lighting options.
Where does a dimmer make sense?
A dimmer is a great idea for any living space with mixed uses. The family game night will need quite different lighting than for example a nice evening with friends, chatting over a glass of wine after dinner.
Which lamps are dimmable?
In general, all incandescent light bulbs and halogen lamps can be dimmed. Energy-saving lamps, however, are another story. Most of these cannot be dimmed.
Many LED lamp types, on the other hand, can. Look for relevant labelling before you buy. Dimmable lamps will have the dimmer icon on the product packaging.
